The House Forms Benghazi Committee with Rep. Gowdy at the Helm
Almost 3 years have passed and the Obama administration is still feeling the heat as Americans continue to demand answers on Benghazi.
The backlash and outcry on the September 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya continues on as the administration tries to turn a blind eye and cover up the events that left 4 innocent Americans dead.
Last week, Speaker John Boehner announced a House investigation into Benghazi. This announcement came after the State Department released a previously undisclosed email showing that a top White House aide had coordinated talking points about the attack for then-U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice.
Sadly, Democrats are mocking the formation of the committee calling it a political exercise. In an interview on Fox News Sunday, California Rep. Adam Schiff said, “the investigation is a colossal waste of time, and I don’t think it makes sense, really, for Democrats to participate.” However, House Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi doesn’t agree, and in a written statement said, “If this review is to be fair, it must be truly bipartisan.” Pelosi is calling for an even number of Democrats and Republicans on the committee.
The Benghazi committee will consist of seven Republicans and five Democrats, and be chaired by Congressman Trey Gowdy. Gowdy served as a federal prosecutor until 2011 when he began serving in Congress, and is a favorite among conservatives who believe the Obama administration politicized the intelligence in the Benghazi attack.
“Trey Gowdy is as dogged, focused and serious-minded as they come,” House Speaker John Boehner said in announcing him as chair of the committee. “His background as a federal prosecutor and his zeal for the truth make him the ideal person to lead this panel.”
The committee will keep the administration on the defense as they try to answer questions. At the same time there will be mounting evidence of the president’s continued lack of credibility, which will make it difficult for Democrats running for reelection to distance themselves from him and his failed policies..
The formation of the Benghazi committee is sure to boost approval ratings for Republicans in the coming months, and is causing some Democrats to oppose the investigation under the pretense of it being used as a pawn to boost voter confidence in the Republican party. However, the loss of American lives remain a tragedy and that above all else is worth investigating.
