Hillary Clinton Tries to Show a Softer Side
From SNL to the Tonight Show, Hillary Clinton is working overtime to increase her likability factor among voters.
Up until recently, Hillary Clinton has enjoyed a sizeable lead in the polls among all presidential contenders. Currently, her 60 point lead has dwindled to +18. Between the backlash from her email scandal, and murmurs of Vice President Joe Biden entering the race, Hillary has begun to struggle to stay on topic and focused when it comes to her presidential campaign.
As the unofficial candidate of the Democratic party, it’s becoming apparent, even the Democrats are second guessing backing Hillary in 2016. Hillary’s poor use of judgement when it came to using a private email server has only seemed to get worse as the investigation deepens.
Being compared to Richard Nixon, Hillary Clinton is working diligently to reinvent herself one appearance at a time. However, this is easier said than done. Try as Nixon did, he was unable to escape the backlash from his recordings. Hillary is in a similar position as she tries to put distance between the email scandal and herself.
In the meantime, Hillary is trying to show a softer side and come off less polarizing, which is quite the task given to a candidate who has trouble painting herself as the kind of outsider who’s going to clean up a broken and corrupt Washington system, especially when she is very much a part of that system and has been for years.
Nevertheless, Hillary Clinton is determined to try and make things right. Over the weekend, Hillary appeared on NBC’s Saturday Night Live alongside SNL regular Kate McKinnon, who impersonates Hillary Clinton on the show, the skit gave Hillary a chance to show a softer, funnier side. Hillary played a bartender and touched on topics ranging from the Keystone Pipeline, to gay marriage, to even impersonating Donald Trump. But Hillary’s pop culture appearances don’t stop there. Hillary has danced the nae nae with Ellen DeGeneres and did a skit with Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s “Tonight Show” where she also impersonated Donald Trump.
It is no surprise that Hillary Clinton is working hard to showcase a softer, gentler side of her personality and get out from under the ever growing email scandal, but the truth remains, she is still losing ground in key states such as New Hampshire and Iowa. Trailing Bernie Sanders by a whopping 18 points in New Hampshire, Hillary has a tough road ahead if she wants to stay in the game and make it past the primary season, especially with rumors of Biden entering the race. With a small field of presidential contenders on the left side of the aisle, Hillary Clinton should be focusing on telling voters why she wants to be president instead of trying to convince them she’s funny and likeable.
As Democratic strategist David Axelrod tweeted last month, “Hillary: Live with it! isn’t much of a battle cry.” At the end of the day, regardless of where you fall on the Hillary spectrum, love her or hate her, she has yet to stand for anything other than wanting to be the first female president and fulfill her own personal ambitions. Let’s face it, even Obama knew better than to run a presidential campaign on making history.
