1966 Midterms Spell GOP Victory in 2014

After losing two presidential elections to Democrats, and watching America suffer at as result of Obama’s absent leadership style, Republicans have had enough.

In the words of Karl Marx, “history often repeats itself first as a tragedy, second as a farce.” If this is true then the GOP will be laughing all the way back to Washington after November 4th, and Democrats should heed the warning by looking back at the 1966 midterms.

Hailed as a tidal wave of rejection the 1966 midterm election set the tone for a Republican comeback with Richard Nixon at the helm. Nixon worked diligently behind the scenes in 1966 to secure a GOP victory.

Two years prior in 1964, Democrats had secured a resounding victory with Lyndon B. Johnson. The promises of a “Great Society” and the “war on poverty” proved to resonate with voters. Fast forward two years later, and Johnson’s popularity began to slip as a result of the lack of success in Vietnam, race riots at home, and an increasing sense that the Great Society was running amok, spending too much and centralizing too much.

Currently, Obama is facing similar strife as President Johnson heading into midterm elections. After winning big in 2012, many voters are waking up with an Obama-sized hangover to the issues plaguing our country. The growing threat of ISIS, is leaving Americans uneasy at the prospect of another war in the Middle East. At home, there isn’t much relief as a result of a slow moving economy and limited job market, forcing many college graduates to move back home with their parents.

Lurching from one crisis to another without adequately resolving any of them, Obama is up a creek without a strategy. Recently, Obama tabled the issue of immigration until after midterm elections; this was seen by many as a political move to try and safe guard Democrats from losing in November.

Obama’s lack of strategy coupled with his plummeting approval rating, and his inability to lead his own party and the country is mimicking the midterm elections of 1966, giving the GOP a leg up in the election.

As America looks onward to 2014, it is becoming apparent, Obama may be the glue that seals the deal for Republicans come November. Much like the midterm elections of 1966, 2014 shows the promise of a new day in America and the start of a winning streak for the GOP.
